Trans Canada Tour 2004
On the explorer’s track

“One doesn’t travel in order to arrive but in order to travel.”
JW v Goethe

Following Goethe’s motto and having a great excuse – what more can the enthusiastic moped rider ask for?

In the summer 2003 the two of us, Franz Weiss and Joachim Fessler, will attempt to cross Canada from Halifax to Vancouver - a journey of about 7000km on two old-timer mopeds.

In order to fulfill the international scope of the event one of the two mopeds is an 1974 Austrian “Puch M50 racing” which is currently being transformed to meet Canada
fitness requirements. However, after our great experiences during the Australia tour we stick to our “private brand”. A “Zuendapp Super Combinette” from 1961 will be able to prove what high class workmanship can provide after more than 40 years.

Compared to the Australian tour 2003 we have twice as much horsepower. The Zuendapp is pulled by 2.75 horses whereas the Puch produces 2.6 horsepower at 5200 revs.

Considering the length of the tour which is 6000-7000 km not only the engine power counts but also the load the riders’ bums can take. Following old traditions, no tuning of the engines or carburettors will be made. It looks like the maximum speed will be about 45 km/h on flat terrain with tail wind. Like in Australia last year, additional weight will be paragliding gear for flights in the Rocky Mountains. We’ve already experienced “travelling slowly” together in 1999 when we did a little Canada tour with homemade scooters in Nova Scottia and New Brunswick.

No continental traverse without a crew ! We are supported by friends before and during the tour. Dunja Welzel designs the transport box, Olaf George organises the import of the vehicles into the country, Janosch Junger is the webmaster during the tour and Tobias Kaupp does the translations into English.

Since we are travelling on old-timers we still need a few replacement parts. Whoever has some stuff lying around can check here if we’d need it.
